Nearly fifty years after the first “Law for the protection of monumental and artistic character of the city of Siena” (January 3, 1963, n. 3), the paper aims to provide an initial assessment of its effects. The contribution, starting from the analysis of some examples executed in the last period, investigates the progressive development of a widespread practice, which sees the collaboration between the Municipality and the Superintendency, in many cases extendend to the University. It is necessary to converge more and more historical, architectural, mineralogical-petrographic, technical and structural skills in order to get a comprehensive examination of each case. The scientific analysis, carried out primarily through its own methods of mineralogy and petrography, such as polarized light optical microscopy on thin sections and X-ray diffraction, are targeted to the material characterization and definition of conservation status, and cover plaster, bricks, building and ornamental stones.
