This research provides a preliminary critical analysis of the exhibition history of the artist-run spaces opened by Ugo Carrega in Milan: Centro Suolo (1969-1970), Centro Tool (1971-1973), Mercato del Sale (1974-1991) and Euforia Costante (1993; 1996–1997), dedicated to the promotion of visual poetry. Through a selection of artworks and documents held in the Mart Museum’s Archivio del ’900 and the Museion collection, this study restores a renewed centrality to these spaces – long considered on the fringes of the market – within the art system by examining the history of artist-run spaces’ self-management practices, the critical reception of visual poetry and an analysis of their exhibition displays between the 1960s and 1990s.
