This dissertation offers a critical edition and an interpretive and explanatory commentary on an unpublished collection of essays by Franco Fortini, left unfinished at the time of his death. Entitled "Saggi stranieri" in its most advanced stages of composition, the work was conceived as a collection of writings on European literatures and foreign literary criticism, in implicit dialogue with "Saggi italiani" and "Nuovi Saggi italiani". The archival materials, held at the Archivio Franco Fortini of the University of Siena, include manuscripts and computer printouts. Of particular significance are the numerous draft tables of contents, which document the author’s working method and reveal his close attention to thematic resonances and combinatory relationships among the texts. The study develops along two complementary lines: a philological one, aimed at establishing an edition as faithful as possible to the author’s final intentions, accompanied by a detailed explanatory commentary; and an interpretive one, focused on the macrotextual relationships within the collection and on Fortini’s distinctive profile as a scholar of foreign literature: translator, critic, and exegete. The analysis further investigates the essayist’s stylistic postures, including oppositional and contrastive strategies, a predilection for aphorism and epigram, and analogical and metaphorical devices. The result is a critical reassessment of Fortini’s trajectory as an essayist, tracing the connecting threads that run through the architecture of the text and casting new light on his contribution to the study of foreign literatures.
