The essays written on that occasion by Brandi, which became part of the Theory of Restoration, remain a model of method. His examination is a guide to the study of the execution techniques of paintings in art literature as a tool for conservation and restoration. The great historian, in emphasising the need for a cautious approach to cleaning that foresaw the presence of fragile painting layers and uncharted materials, addressed fundamental aspects of the reading of sources, their contextualisation, and problems of a lexical nature in the interpretation of texts. This paper intends to highlight the innovative relevance of such an approach, which laid the foundations for historical research on artistic techniques, and directed further studies in the field.

Il titolo richiama un articolo scritto da Brandi nel 1950 nell’ambito della Cleaning Controversy, mossa dai restauri realizzati alla National Gallery di Londra. I saggi scritti in quell’occasione da Brandi, entrati a far parte della Teoria del Restauro, restano un modello di metodo. La sua disamina è un viatico per lo studio della tecnica esecutiva dei dipinti nella letteratura artistica come strumento per la conservazione e il restauro. Il grande storico, nel ribadire la necessità di un approccio cauto alla pulitura che prevedesse la presenza di stesure pittoriche fragili e materiali poco codificati, affrontava aspetti fondamentali della lettura delle fonti, della loro contestualizzazione, delle problematiche di natura lessicale nell’interpretazione dei testi.
