The paper analyzes the nature of Julian's various references to Platonic works. The emperor adopts a 'multi-layered' approach to Plato's dialogues, consistent with the extremely diverse typology of his writings (encomiastic, polemical, theological); only in the most conceptually challenging contexts does he draw upon certain nuances of the 'theologizing' exegesis applied by the Neoplatonists to the Master's texts (particularly the Timaeus).

Abstract
The paper analyzes the nature of Julian's various references to Platonic works. The emperor adopts a 'multi-layered' approach to Plato's dialogues, consistent with the extremely diverse typology of his writings (encomiastic, polemical, theological); only in the most conceptually challenging contexts does he draw upon certain nuances of the 'theologizing' exegesis applied by the Neoplatonists to the Master's texts (particularly the Timaeus).File | Dimensione | Formato | |
