The necessity for a comprehensive re-examination of the poetry of Jehan Erart arose from the inadequacy and questionability of certain ecdotical choices made by the previous editor. Therefore, the aim of this work is to provide an abreast critical edition of this poet's lyrical work. The manuscript tradition of Old French lyric poetry commonly assigns him twenty-two assertive texts, to which three poems of controversial attribution are added. The genres represented are the courtly song, the "pastourelle", the "planh", the "motet" and the "malmaritata" song. The biographical data are appointed in the first chapter. This includes a concise description of the context in which Jehan Erart would have operated and the literary motifs that inform his production. The second chapter opens with an examination of the witnesses to Erart's songbook. A short descriptive card has been dedicated to each code. Cases of discordant attribution, including apocryphal compositions, are re-discussed. The chapter ends with a general examination of the manuscript tradition. In the third chapter, meticulous exploration is dedicated to the metrical forms employed within trouvère work. This section delves into the captivating structural elements that define the most intriguing facets of the trouvère’s performance. This is characterised by a marked formal experimentalism, due to the use of a wide range of patterns. A metrically proteiform songbook emerges. The investigation of metrical forms is followed, in the fourth chapter, by an examination of the melody, available for twenty-four of the twenty-five texts attributed to the trouvère. The study of the musical text tradition yielded similar results to those that emerged from the analysis of the verbal text tradition, with the exception of a few duly noted special cases. The fifth chapter is devoted to the study of the language of the poet. The objective data obtained from the rhyme and syllabic measure demonstrate its belonging to the well-known Franco-Picardian koiné employed by most trouvères. However, there are less widespread linguistic phenomena that can only be traced back to the north-eastern area. The most decisive information is provided by the lexicon, in which a number of piccardisms are detected, many of them taken from the vocabulary of medieval drapery. The editorial criteria are illustrated in the sixth chapter, followed by the published poems. The poems of doubtful attribution have been placed in the appendix, after the assertive texts. The work concludes with a rhyming dictionary, a selective glossary and a bibliography, in which the acronyms and keys used are dissolved.
