This research explores the links between poetic expression and naturalistic imagery in Italian vernacular poetry from the 13th to the 14th century. Our study is based on the analysis of poetic structures whose main elements are images depicting the natural world. The main aim of this analysis is to establish the extent to which such literary images are linked to the spread of scientific research and knowledge in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Europe. Particular attention has been paid to scientific treatises, notably bestiaries, lapidaries, herbariums, and alchemical treatises, so as to propose an overall assessment of the influence of scientific knowledge in Italian poetry from its origin until the 14th century.

Abstract
This research explores the links between poetic expression and naturalistic imagery in Italian vernacular poetry from the 13th to the 14th century. Our study is based on the analysis of poetic structures whose main elements are images depicting the natural world. The main aim of this analysis is to establish the extent to which such literary images are linked to the spread of scientific research and knowledge in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Europe. Particular attention has been paid to scientific treatises, notably bestiaries, lapidaries, herbariums, and alchemical treatises, so as to propose an overall assessment of the influence of scientific knowledge in Italian poetry from its origin until the 14th century.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
