The chief aim in carrying out the study, and subsequent geophysical survey, was to identify any subsurface features of archaeological interest that relate to the historic settlement. This includes the arrangement of streets and city-blocks and the physical composition of buildings. The urban setting of Gortyn was of a considerable size in antiquity, and although many buildings and venues are known from archaeological excavations, the majority of the city remains buried. Many aspects of the ancient urban organization and its development through time are still unclear. The specific research work was a small, yet important step toward a better appreciation of the city’s ancient built environment.

Abstract
The chief aim in carrying out the study, and subsequent geophysical survey, was to identify any subsurface features of archaeological interest that relate to the historic settlement. This includes the arrangement of streets and city-blocks and the physical composition of buildings. The urban setting of Gortyn was of a considerable size in antiquity, and although many buildings and venues are known from archaeological excavations, the majority of the city remains buried. Many aspects of the ancient urban organization and its development through time are still unclear. The specific research work was a small, yet important step toward a better appreciation of the city’s ancient built environment.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
