This paper reports the results of a georadar survey extended on the whole subsurface of Piazza del Campo in Siena. The comparison with documentary, cartographic and iconographic sources has allowed to attribute a historical meaning to the structural evidences highlighted by the instrument. We refer, in particular, to the system of bottini, underground aqueducts, for the most part still functioning today, built mainly between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. From the investigations have not emerged evidence such as to suggest a pre-existing urban fabric to the square. This confirms the most recent historiographical hypotheses about the direct transformation, between the XII and XIII centuries, of a natural slope outside the early medieval walls into an open public space used as a market, gradually surrounded by buildings that between the two and the fourteenth century were distributed around the perimeter. The fourteenth-century reconfiguration of the Piazza del Campo had to exploit, therefore, an open space already used for public functions.

Abstract
The fourteenth-century reconfiguration of the Piazza del Campo had to exploit, therefore, an open space already used for public functions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
