Background The consumption of drugs has reached high rates in the world and the presence of drugs on banknotes has been well established. The contamination may occur through direct contact during drug trafficking with the same people handling the cocaine powder and the money; or rolling up the banknote for sniffing the powder through the tube formed. Indirect contamination occurs by the contact of ‘‘clean’’ banknotes with the contaminated ones in automated teller machines and cash counting machines. The aim of our review was to investigate the presence of cocaine, but also of other drugs, on circulating banknotes.

Abstract
Background The consumption of drugs has reached high rates in the world and the presence of drugs on banknotes has been well established. The contamination may occur through direct contact during drug trafficking with the same people handling the cocaine powder and the money; or rolling up the banknote for sniffing the powder through the tube formed. Indirect contamination occurs by the contact of ‘‘clean’’ banknotes with the contaminated ones in automated teller machines and cash counting machines. The aim of our review was to investigate the presence of cocaine, but also of other drugs, on circulating banknotes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
