The Authors present the results of a techno-functional analysis carried out on Callysta chione shell tools. from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Grotta del Cavallo (Southern Italy). Although its physical and chemical characteristics would make shell a suitable raw material for the manufacture of specific classes of tools, there is little archaeological evidence for its use in Italy, especially for the Middle Palaeolithic period. Given the exceptional nature of the shell industry from Grotta del Cavallo and its good state of preservation, experimental activity has been undertaken to verify the potential of use-wear analysis on shell tools and to interpret the functional “role” of a sample of archaeological tools from Grotta del Cavallo

Abstract
The Authors present the results of a techno-functional analysis carried out on Callysta chione shell tools. from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Grotta del Cavallo (Southern Italy). Although its physical and chemical characteristics would make shell a suitable raw material for the manufacture of specific classes of tools, there is little archaeological evidence for its use in Italy, especially for the Middle Palaeolithic period. Given the exceptional nature of the shell industry from Grotta del Cavallo and its good state of preservation, experimental activity has been undertaken to verify the potential of use-wear analysis on shell tools and to interpret the functional “role” of a sample of archaeological tools from Grotta del CavalloI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
