Abstract

Subject of the contribution is a brief summary of the role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the context of geographic discipline over the past twenty years. In carrying out this review we have tried to highlight some thoughts on their role in the future of the discipline. As will be shown below, the relationship between geography and GIS is now very confused and this was also due to the recent introduction of this technology. A innovation process that was not accompanied by an adequate process of epistemological reasoning. The conclusion of this paper is that it would be a mistake, at least by this discipline to consider GIS as an exclusively technical issue instead of an instrument that is changing definitely the structure of space research and reasoning. The aim of this review is not to conduct a mere speculative analysis of this transformation process, but mainly to stress the risks that a lack of consideration will involve in the future of the discipline.
