In 1990 Dieler R. et al., described in conjunctival, muscle and peripheral artery biopsies examined by light and electron microscopy, amorphous and membranous electron-dense deposits in capillaries of Rett syndrome (RTT) patients. Subclinical myocardial dysfunctions in RTT have been recently described in the patients, together with modification of the perfusion index. The presence of cold hands and feet, and blue, is a non-neurological phenotype that characterize RTT up to now not well explained. In order to evaluate the state of the microvascularity in RTT we have performed a complexity analysis of the microvasculature in the patients. By nailfold videocapillaroscopy we observed dilated capillaries and irregular, chaotic microvascular patterns. To quantify these features we have performed a nonlinear analysis of the images. Entropy resulted higher in Rett females than in sex- and age-matched healthy individuals (p<0.001). In RTT patients subtle modifications of the microvascular system are present, aspects that deserve to be deeply investigated.
