I argue in favour of a solution different from that of Schlenker and others of the problems posed by languages such as Anharic, in which the first person singular pronominal subject of an embedded clause can sometimes refer not to the speaker, but to the subordinate subject itself. Based on this solution that uses the notions of logophoric evidence and of shifted indexicality in a strict sense, and uses some notions by Higginbotham, I proceed to reconstruct and renew Castañeda’s suggestions about quasi-indexicality, and to give rules for the intelligent use of “I” both in main and embedded clauses. A new solution to the problem of Kaplanian monsters is thus proposed, and some consequences about the relationship between language and self-consciousness are drawn.
