Even if Greek Old Comedy exerted no direct influence on Latin comic theatre, Naevius' theatrical production shows that he was well acquaintanted with the plays of the Archaia. Through the close scrutiny of a few Naevian fragments and the analysis of the plots and the titles of some of his comedies, this paper will attempt to demonstrate that, even if Naevius never wrote an Old Comedy in the Aristophanic mode, he was powerfully influenced by the work of his ancient Greek predecessors.

Abstract
Even if Greek Old Comedy exerted no direct influence on Latin comic theatre, Naevius' theatrical production shows that he was well acquaintanted with the plays of the Archaia. Through the close scrutiny of a few Naevian fragments and the analysis of the plots and the titles of some of his comedies, this paper will attempt to demonstrate that, even if Naevius never wrote an Old Comedy in the Aristophanic mode, he was powerfully influenced by the work of his ancient Greek predecessors.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
