This paper provides an overview of the state of the art about the problem of early medieval fortifications of former Roman towns. The selected area is central Italy where both Lombards and Byzantines ruled. The time span is up to year 1000, due to the lack of direct archaeological data for many case studies until the first documented medieval fortifications.
