The Italian front

The Cambridge History of the First World War, edited by Jay Winter and by the Scientific Committee of the Historial de la Grand Guerre in Peronne (France), is so far the most prestigious collection of studies internationally published in the occasion of the Centenary of the First World War. This three volumes collection has been already immediately and fully translated into French. In its first volume, this article shows the Italian-Austrian front of the war in an innovative way: on both sides: In fact, it is based for the first time on both Italian and Austrian bibliographies, as well as on the international one. The article then draws a transnational, or at least parallel, picture of the Italo-Austrian campaigns of the war. What happened in this campaign, from 1914 to 1918, is analyzed from both the Italian and the Austrian fronts. This article is the only one authored by an Italian scholar in all the three volumes of the Cambridge History of the First World War.

La Cambridge History of the First World War, a cura di Jay Winter e del comitato scientifico dell’Historial de la Grand Guerre di Peronne (Francia), è sinora la più prestigiosa raccolta di studi edita a livello internazionale per il Centenario della prima guerra mondiale. È stata già immediatamente e integralmente tradotta in francese. Nell’ambito del suo primo volume questo articolo osserva in maniera innovativa il fronte della guerra italo-austriaca da ambedue i versanti: si basa infatti per la prima volta su una bibliografia italiana ed austriaca, oltre che internazionale. È una storia quindi transnazionale o quanto meno parallela della guerra. Ciò che avvenne su quel fronte è infatti narrato sia dalla parte italiana sia dalla parte austriaca. Questo articolo è l’unico firmato da uno studioso italiano in tutti e tre i volumi dell’opera.
