The aim of the paper is to present the semantic characterisation of the debates between realists and anti-realists proposed by Dummett. In particular, the role of the principles of bivalence and of valence as criteria of realism is discussed (§ 3), and the relations between anti-realism, reductivism and reductionism are analyzed (§ 4). In § 5 the status of the verificationist principle of knowability is discussed; it is argued that its ordinary formalization has not, for an anti-realist, the same meaning it has for a realist, and the possibility of a ‘neutral’ formalization is discussed.

Abstract
The aim of the paper is to present the semantic characterisation of the debates between realists and anti-realists proposed by Dummett. In particular, the role of the principles of bivalence and of valence as criteria of realism is discussed (§ 3), and the relations between anti-realism, reductivism and reductionism are analyzed (§ 4). In § 5 the status of the verificationist principle of knowability is discussed; it is argued that its ordinary formalization has not, for an anti-realist, the same meaning it has for a realist, and the possibility of a ‘neutral’ formalization is discussed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
