In this paper the corpus-driven approach to language analysis (first proposed by Tognini Bonelli 2001) is explored in greater depth as a qualitative (sic) - as well as a quantitative - revolution to linguistics. In this approach, it is argued - no data are excluded, and descriptive categories are based on recurrent patterns and frequency distribution. There is no discontinuity between text, genre, variety and contexts of situation and culture. The importance of computer technology, and the unity of form and meaning in language description, are highlighted.

Abstract
In this paper the corpus-driven approach to language analysis (first proposed by Tognini Bonelli 2001) is explored in greater depth as a qualitative (sic) - as well as a quantitative - revolution to linguistics. In this approach, it is argued - no data are excluded, and descriptive categories are based on recurrent patterns and frequency distribution. There is no discontinuity between text, genre, variety and contexts of situation and culture. The importance of computer technology, and the unity of form and meaning in language description, are highlighted.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
