The paper presents the reasons behind the reuse of legacy data for sociolinguistic research. The case study is represented by the degemination of -rr- (e.g. gue[r]a, guerra ‘war’) in Tuscany: the feature is investigated in three different oral archives containing speech data: two archives collected in the domain of oral history by Angela Spinelli and Tiziana Noce, and one produced by the Carta dei dialetti italiani project. The aim is to demonstrate how much sociolinguistic research can benefit from the conscious and respectful reuse of legacy data.
