This paper is dedicated to some aspects of three competitions for the chair of Roman law, held at the University of Siena in the last decades of the 19th century (1877, 1885 and 1887). The author reconstructs the competitive procedures and the scientific personality of the winners (i.e., respectively, Luigi Moriani, Muzio Pampaloni and Pietro Rossi), in the context of the Italian legal culture of that period.
