L’esperienza del mondo: Goethe e Sade tra viaggio e romanzo

The volume sets out as a comparative comparison of the accounts of travels to Italy by Johann Wolfgang Goethe in 1786-1788 and the Marquis de Sade in 1775-1776, and their subsequent literary reworking in the ‘novels of formation’ of the Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre of 1795 and the Julietteof 1797. The German's odeporical account and the novel-masterpiece have been much studied, while those of the Frenchman have been practically forgotten - especially in the Italian context. By comparing them, the aim is to highlight the specific critical-theoretical and cultural weight that the works of the two authors assumed in the European cultural context of the late 18th century, especially in the light of the revolutionary deflagration of 1789. Taking as its starting point the observation of the idea of Bildung, its philosophical, critical-theoretical and, not least, aesthetic manifestations, the aim of this volume is to show how the antithetical poetics of Goethe and Sade represent the paroxysmal and contrasting moments of the jagged Enlightenment philosophy of late 18th-century Europe: on the one hand the aesthetic, social and humanitarian classicism of the Weimar Goethe, on the other the individualistic hypertrophy and materialist hyper-subjectivism of the Marquis de Sade.

Il volume si imposta come un confronto comparato dei resoconti dei viaggi in Italia effettuati da Johann Wolfgang Goethe nel 1786-1788 e dal Marchese de Sade nel 1775-1776, e della loro successiva rielaborazione letteraria nei “romanzi di formazione” dei Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre del 1795 e della Juliette del 1797. Molto studiato il resoconto odeporico e il romanzo-capolavoro del tedesco, praticamente dimenticati – soprattutto in ambito italiano – quelli del francese, attraverso la loro comparazione si vuole mettere in luce il peso specifico, critico-teorico e culturale, che le opere dei due autori hanno assunto nel contesto culturale europeo di fine Settecento soprattutto alla luce della deflagrazione rivoluzionaria del 1789. Prendendo le mosse dall’osservazione dell’idea di Bildung, delle sue manifestazioni filosofiche, critico-teoriche e non per ultimo estetiche, nel presente volume si vuole dimostrare come le antitetiche poetiche di Goethe e Sade rappresentino i momenti parossistici e contrastivi della frastagliata filosofia illuministica del secondo Settecento europeo: da una parte il classicismo estetico, sociale e umanitario del Goethe weimariano, dall’altra l’ipertrofia individualistica e l’ipersoggettivismo materialista del Marchese de Sade.
