Agri-food systems are at the centre of the global debate on sustainable development. In the path towards more sustainable agri-food systems, technological innovation is a key factor. However, attention should also be given to social innovation. Good examples include a stronger cooperation between value chain actors, new market opportunities for sustainable farmers and more rigorous measurement, traceability systems and sustainability certification. Such social innovations are particularly useful in a context of smallholders and small food companies as in the case of the Mediterranean region, and are crucial for more sustainable production, which is at the core of the Mediterranean diet.

Abstract
Agri-food systems are at the centre of the global debate on sustainable development. In the path towards more sustainable agri-food systems, technological innovation is a key factor. However, attention should also be given to social innovation. Good examples include a stronger cooperation between value chain actors, new market opportunities for sustainable farmers and more rigorous measurement, traceability systems and sustainability certification. Such social innovations are particularly useful in a context of smallholders and small food companies as in the case of the Mediterranean region, and are crucial for more sustainable production, which is at the core of the Mediterranean diet.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
