The paper analyzes the portrait of Socrates present in the orations of Themistius. The rhetorician provides his own interpretation of the figure of the great philosopher, which is not different from that provided by Dio Chrysostom: he portrays him as an example of a political philosopher and the model of the ideal orator. Themistius relates to Socrates his own ideal of "paideia" , and defends himself from the criticisms coming from contemporary intellectuals.

Abstract
The paper analyzes the portrait of Socrates present in the orations of Themistius. The rhetorician provides his own interpretation of the figure of the great philosopher, which is not different from that provided by Dio Chrysostom: he portrays him as an example of a political philosopher and the model of the ideal orator. Themistius relates to Socrates his own ideal of "paideia" , and defends himself from the criticisms coming from contemporary intellectuals.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
