Modern literature still lacks a coherent study of the figure of Socrates in the rhetorical tradition of Late Antiquity. Yet between the 3rd and 4th century AD the myth of Socrates fared well. In this essay I will deal with examples from Themistius and Julian the Emperor. In a time of significant political, religious and cultural change, both authors employ the figure of Socrates, with his typical attitudes, as a testimonial for a definite ideological programme.

Abstract
Modern literature still lacks a coherent study of the figure of Socrates in the rhetorical tradition of Late Antiquity. Yet between the 3rd and 4th century AD the myth of Socrates fared well. In this essay I will deal with examples from Themistius and Julian the Emperor. In a time of significant political, religious and cultural change, both authors employ the figure of Socrates, with his typical attitudes, as a testimonial for a definite ideological programme.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
