In the language of the imperial constitutions the two expressions culpa lata and culpa gravis are never used as synonyms: if in the expression culpa lata the word culpa usually indicates a criterion for attributing the subjective responsibility of the debtor (and the adjective that follows it indicates the intensity of it) in the second phrase the same term refers, vice versa, to an illicit conduct punishable in the criminal trial, certainly when it is serious in its modalities or in its result.
