Un paesaggio rurale dell’Etruria settentrionale: iscrizioni latine dal Medio Valdarno inferiore

Over the years, the rural landscapes of Roman Etruria attracted much scholarly attention. Archaeological research brought to light farms and villas and the traces of ancient roads and land division. Unfortunately, the epigraphic evidence is often too rare to be of help in such undertakings. This paper deals with the Latin inscriptions from the lower Medio Valdarno, a peripheral context at the edge of ancient towns: Florentia, Volaterrae, and Pisae. As we shall see, inscribed monuments provide relevant information to understand the individuals and communities who lived along the Arno River during the early Imperial Age, allowing us to question the actual significance of a rural landscape in Roman Italy.
