This contribution will focus primarily on the possibility of reading into the limited sample of an archaeological excavation the consequence of socio-economic phenomena as complex as those leading to the transformation and the end of an important city in the Early Byzantine Mediterranean. Secondly, it will concern the possibility of using the same phenomena as indicators of the overall transformation of the idea of the city in the Mediterranean, between the 6th and the 8th–9th centuries AD.
