This volume explores the evolution of the idea of ‘enthusiasm’ from Antiquity to the late 18th century. The first study devoted to the subject, after a historical-philosophical excursus on the etymology of the word and the different connotations it has assumed throughout history, the second part focuses on the socio-anthropological character that the idea acquired in the 18th century and in the age of revolutions, and then ultimately interrogates its repercussions in the aesthetic-literary sphere. The study draws its investigative tools from the history of ideas and mentalities of the French matrix. Moreover, along with the extensive bibliographical sifting that characterises it (texts from English, German and French areas are analysed), in order to substantiate its theses the volume makes use of the results of an archive research conducted by the author that brought to light an unpublished text from 1784 (De Enthusiasmo) written by the hitherto forgotten Rhenish Jacobin Adam Lux. Halfway between microhistory, history of ideas and literary history, Lumières et enthousiasme thus aims to be a hermeneutic picklock to understand in a transversal way the reasons for the emergence of the new aesthetic and literary sensibility that involved European culture between the 18th and 19th centuries.

Abstract
Halfway between microhistory, history of ideas and literary history, Lumières et enthousiasme thus aims to be a hermeneutic picklock to understand in a transversal way the reasons for the emergence of the new aesthetic and literary sensibility that involved European culture between the 18th and 19th centuries.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
