The protection of underwater cultural and marine natural heritage is regulated by several international legal instruments other than the 1972 World Heritage Convention. This raises the need to ascertain whether and to what extent diverse international norms may contribute to ensure the conservation of this fundamental part of world heritage particularly when it is located in areas that are beyond State jurisdiction.
