The history of the Palazzo della Farnesina, since 1959 seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, is exemplary of the requalification of the most important building site of the fascist era in Rome under the sign of contemporary art. Initially conceived as the Casa littoria, after World War II the building underwent a radical process of reconversion, thanks to a shrewd design direction and the intervention of artists, called upon, through public tenders, to redefine the face and functions of the new offices of Italian diplomacy: a difficult heritage now called to a new international mission.
