Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) was one of the great protagonists of the 'republic of letters' between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and an essential source of inspiration for the entire European Enlightenment. He was personally involved in the battle for tolerance and the rights of the 'wandering conscience' during the years of Louis XIV's persecution of French Protestants and the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). His theses on tolerance found their broadest and most complete formulation in the "Philosophical Commentary" (1686-1687), which sought to dismantle a tradition that had justified the use of force against heretics since the time of Augustine: this provoked a reaction not only from Catholics but also from the Calvinist world to which he himself belonged. The polemics of the defenders of the different orthodoxies accompanied the "philosopher of Rotterdam" until his death, but his defence of freedom of conscience imposed itself as an essential reference for the European debate. This edition offers Italian readers, for the first time, one of the great modern classics on tolerance, whose influence was comparable to that of Spinoza's "Theological-Political Treatise" and Locke's "Letter on Tolerance". The edition is also unique at international level, because it is the only one (after those of the 18th century) to present not only the complete text of the three parts of the "Commentaire" of 1686-87, but also that of the "Supplement" of 1688.The Italian translation, which combines readability and adherence to the original, is accompanied by an extensive introductory essay and a particularly rich and up-to-date set of notes (pp. 691-821), which clarifies all the obscure points of the text, accurately reconstructs the sources of the quotations and historical references, indicates parallel passages in Bayle's other works as well as polemical references, and provides precise indications for possible further study. Finally, the prestigious publishing location has made it possible to include some figures and, above all, 16 colour plates, which further enrich the publication.
