Economic crisis and crime rate relationship represents a topic that concerned scolars of various disciplines along these last decades. It has been often considered ambiguous and its actual existence has even been doubted. In this paper we used statistics form 29 European countries from 2006 to 2009 to assess this relationship. Structural equation modelling was used to study the data fitting to a series of theoretical structures. Inter alia, we explore two theoretical models that fit the data well. The models have many points of contact with existing theories and with evidences from empirical studies, and moreover seem to confirm existing doubts about the use of unemployment rates in the study of crime trends. © Pensa MultiMedia Editore.
