Emptyscapes: filling ‘empty’ mediterranean landscapes, mapping the archaeological continuum

Emptyscapes project is an interdisciplinary program designed to stimulate changes in the way in which archaeologists in Italy in particular but also more generally in the Mediterranean world study the archaeology of landscapes, moving from an essentially site-based approach to a truly landscape-scale perspective. The aim is to help in the development and wider application of new paradigms for landscape analysis based on the integration between “traditional” approaches, multidisciplinary studies and new methodologies in the form of large-scale geophysical survey, high-resolution LiDAR data and environmental studies (geo and bio archaeology). The geographical focus lie for the most part in central Italy (Tuscany and Lazio) on two sample areas the rural landscape around Rusellae and the urban context of the ancient city of Veii.
