Episode 13 does not just reenact the mythic Homeric encounter between a foreign man and an unguarded girl on the beach of Phaeacia, but alludes simultaneously and repeatedly to other versions--classical and modern of the original erotic-elegiac encounter. Joyce play on prosody reveals that Gerty MacDowell is like the ideal puellae Ovid and Dante a textual-object , a personification allegory, fabricated by the poet-lover.
