The paper wish to present the main problem connected to monitoring the school to work paths of youth. Starting from the conviction that labour demand and school demand are not parallel phenomena, the paper presents the main policy adopted in Italy to overcoming the gap existing, from the human capital point of view, between school output and firms input. After that the interest is focused on the possibility of using longitudinal study on individual for evaluate the effectiveness of such policy. Particular emphasis is devoted on Italian lack of such longitudinal studies and on the possible statistical methods for analysing and evaluating transition processes and occupational/training policy.
