This article focuses on the relationship between mathematics and metaphysics in the first period of Husserl’s writing. This article shows the significance of the mathematical method in Husserl’s first philosophy and the role of Brentano’s psychology. The central topic of this theme is the concept of episteme, that is, the idea of valid knowledge. According to Husserl, this ideal can be achieved only when mathematics, as a paradigm of the method, and psychology, as a para-digm of a genetic description, shape a new form of philosophy. The insistence of Husserl on the importance of a valid knowledge and the centrality of the concept of episteme (both in his writing and in his lessons) shows also the particular historic period in which Husserl thought. In fact, the historical background of this Husserlian reflection is the so called “crisis of the basis of knowledge”.
