Two-pulse and three-pulse electron spin-echo techniques are used to study the molecular arrangement of the Cu(II)-(His)n system in D2O solution at pD=7.3. The 14N nuclei of the imidazole ring were selectively isotopically substituted by 15N. From a computer-aided analysis of the nuclear modulation patterns in the time domain it is concluded that at low temperatures and in the presence of excess histidine the predominant species is in a configuration in which the cupric ion is surrounded by two imidazole nitrogen atoms, two amino nitrogen atoms and two solvent molecules.
