The paper starts from a diachronic and longue durée perspective analyzing the relationship between settlements and road networks for pre-Roman and Roman age and between churches and thoroughfare for the late antique and early medieval horizon, identifying a series of trends and asking new questions. The surveyed area corresponds to lower Tuscany and in particular, the basins of the Ombrone and Orcia valleys, landscapes that for more than twenty-five years have been the subject of integration between the rich documentary sources available in this area, large scale archaeological surveys and open-area excavations.
