Abstract

Emptyscapes, is a two year project funded by the European Union under the Marie Curie scheme; however, it should be emphasised here that archae-ological questions, methodological debate and re-search activities leading the Emptyscapes project are deeply rooted in the work carried out by the writer and his research team in the past two de-cades at the University of Siena and in the outcome of wide-range international partnerships.1 The re-search is aimed to stimulate changes in the way in which archaeologists, in Italy in particular but also more generally in the Mediterranean world, study the archaeology of landscapes, moving from an essentially site-based approach to a more com-prehensive landscape-scale perspective. The cen-tral purpose of this paper is to offer a preliminary report of Emptyscapes project which will form one of the first attempts to apply a holistic approach encompassing many different methodologies to re-construct the linked evolution of the cultural and environmental landscapes in central Italy, from the prehistoric to medieval periods.
