Grotta del Cavallo (LE): strumento in osso inedito dell’Uluzziano antico

In this paper we describe a diaphysis fragment that bears evidence of anthropogenic action consistent with its use as a tool. The artefact in question was discovered in 1986 at the base of the Uluzzian series of Cavallo cave. Through our detailed analysis of the piece, carried out with a 3D digital microscope, and through experimentation aimed at better understanding its technological features, we have been able to reconstruct the modalities of the tool. In addition to taphonomic studies of the site’s macro-fauna, reassessment of the Uluzzian bone industry further reinforces the emerging opinion, based on recent anthropological studies, that the occupants of the site may represent some of the earliest Anatomically Modern Humans to penetrate into Europe.
