In this work, on the basis of recent work on indexicals and quasi-indexicals, I aim to show how de se attitudes, studied by both philosophy and linguistics, may throw a remarkably surprising light on the more-than-linguistic nature of consciousness and self-consciousness. (I also provide a complete taxonomy of consciousness and self-consciousness, their interrelation and their functions.). The main thesis is that consciousness precedes and predates language in its complete form, but also that language is necessary to reveal full-fledged self-consciousness, e.g. as self-knowledge. (Thus we reach a solution of the so-called "paradox of self-consciousness.) I also try to show how a weak, modest form of naturalism in the philosophy of mind can coexist with the acceptance of phenomenical qualities (qualia), of the freedom of action, and of the subjective experience of time.
